What tree should I plant in Central MA?
It depends on your soil and site, but natives that do well around here include red maple, oaks, serviceberry, and river birch. One honest note: with emerald ash borer active, I do not recommend planting ash right now. The walkthrough is where we match the tree to the spot.
When is the best time to plant a tree in New England?
Early fall is best: the soil is warm, the air is cooling, and roots get a head start before winter. Spring is a solid second. Summer planting can work but demands serious watering discipline. I will tell you honestly if a planting should wait a season.
Can you move an existing tree?
Often, yes, if the tree is small enough to dig with a proper root ball and healthy enough to take the move. Dormant season gives the best odds. Some trees are not worth moving, and I will tell you that up front instead of charging you to lose a tree slowly.
