The town with a tree at the center of Massachusetts

Rutland is literally the center of Massachusetts, and the marker for it is a tree: the Central Tree off Central Tree Road. A town that puts a tree on its map is my kind of town. Rutland is also one of the faster-growing towns in the county, which means two kinds of tree work side by side: young trees in newer neighborhoods that need structural pruning to grow up safe, and the old farm maples and roadside giants that came with the land.

The elevation here brings real ice, and the big rural lots off Route 122A carry white pine and oak that shed limbs every winter. I handle both ends: keeping the old trees standing where they deserve it, and setting the new ones up right. Roadside trees fall under Chapter 87 and the town tree warden, and I will flag it when yours does.

In Rutland I provide: pruning and trimming, plant health care, tree removal, emergency and storm response, cabling and bracing, consultations, and planting.

Rutland tree questions

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Rutland?

On your own property, generally no. Trees in the road layout are public shade trees under MGL Chapter 87 and go through the Rutland tree warden. I will tell you which rule applies to your tree before anything happens.

What tree problems are common in Rutland?

Ice damage at elevation, white pine and oak limb failures on the big rural lots, old farm maples with splitting unions, and emerald ash borer in the ash. In the newer neighborhoods, the common problem is young trees planted badly, which structural pruning can still fix.

How fast can you get to Rutland?

About half an hour from my base in Brookfield. Estimates are easy to schedule and emergency calls are answered day or night.
