When is the best time to prune trees in New England?
For most trees, late winter into early spring, before the leaves push out. Dead or hazardous limbs should come off any time of year. Maples pruned in late winter will drip sap, which looks dramatic but does not hurt the tree. If you are not sure where your tree lands, call and I will tell you.
Do you top trees?
No. Topping ruins a tree's structure, invites decay, and grows back as weakly attached shoots that become tomorrow's hazard. When a tree needs to be smaller, I use reduction cuts back to healthy side branches. That lowers height and risk without wrecking the tree.
